November 3, 2008

Holiday Greetings,

The calm twenty-eight degree dawn broke with a pale blue, pink-brushed sky over Cobscook Bay and a thin frost layer over the fields.  Gray clouds moved in low as dairy cows traversed the bridge for their final foraging of the fall in our point pasture fields.  The chicken tractors (moveable pens) are sheltering the last few hundred meat birds, the potatoes are harvested, the chirpy turkeys are getting plump, and the newly planted garlic has been mulched.

Mother Nature’s palette has faded to dull earth tones, blueberry fields are being mowed, eaglets have flown from nests on the edge of the Bay, empty veggie rows are sodden, and the Tide Mill humans are furiously securing firewood to warm against the winds of winter.  Ah, the transition to this season is aided by the return to standard time, with its dwindling afternoon daylight hours.

However, the pace is quickening in the wreath department. Soon, balsam fir will be flying, cones and moss wired and UPS will make daily treks to the Farm to start wreaths on their holiday journey.
