Tide Mill Organic Farm: Our StoryIn 1765, a member of the Passamaquoddy tribe guided Robert Bell, an immigrant from Scotland, to the site where built a tide-powered grist mill.
Members of the Bell family enjoy a buggy ride on Tide Mill Farm. Today, Tide Mill Farm is a multiple-family, 9 generation farm. Most of its 1,600 acres are forest, with 40 acres of fields and 6 miles of shore land.
This aerial view of the farm, towards the North, was taken by Brian Bell. |

The farm is located in Washington County, along the edge of Maine's easternmost coast. The traditional livelihoods of fishing, farming, and forestry are still the mainstay for many families. We exist in a largely resource-based economy with people living very close to the rhythms of the earth and its changing seasons. Currently, members of the 7th generation sustainably manage the woodlands and diverse agriculture endeavors. The renovated century-old farmhouse is a vacation rental enjoyed by people who want to experience the beauty of coastal Maine on a historical working family farm. The members of the 8th generation produce organic foods: vegetables, fruit and berries, meat, eggs, and dairy. During November and December the three generations work together to deliver fragrant balsam fir creations to homes from coast to coast. Aaron Bell and Carly DelSignore are the husband/wife team that own and operate Tide Mill Organics, the certified organic produce and meat business. Carly, born and raised in western Maryland, met Aaron at the University of Maine in Orono. We work together managing different passions we each have within our business. Equally shared is the work and joys of raising our children, Hailey 6, Paige 4, and Henry 6 months. Aaron and Carly manage their business for profit and the common good. Our goals include connecting people to healthy food; educating consumers and our community about the importance of locally farmed, organic food; strengthening our local economy; and rejuvenating agriculture as an economically viable lifestyle in Washington County. We hope to leave behind a more enriched environment for the future generations. Rachel and her family are members of the eighth and ninth generation Bells. Rachel Bell and Sam Furth write and perform folk rock and country songs inspired by their homeplace, Tide Mill Farm and our surrounding community. |
