Hailey and chickens

Certified Organic Chickens

We raise our chickens within a rotationally grazed system with our dairy cattle.  The chickens are raised within a "chicken tractor" that is an enclosed box without a floor.  This gives them protection from predators, such as fox, coyote, racoons and owls and allows them to eat fresh grass and spread their  manure directly on the field, fertilizing our pastures.  The dairy cows graze a few days to a few weeks ahead of our chicken tractors, eating the grass down to the 3 inch level where the birds can maximize their grazing and the chickens help to control parasites in our dairy herd.

Our birds are given access to fresh, green pasture, certified organic grains, seaweed, mineral supplements, fresh water, and plenty of bugs. We pay attention to health of our birds and  raise our chickens with care and respect. We do not give them any antibiotics or growth hormones.

Certified Organic Pork

We raise our pigs in a healthy, loving environment with access to plenty of rooting space. They have exposure to wild greens and are fed certified organic grain. Our pigs are an integral part of our whole farm system, busily clearing previously forested land to make the way for more vegetable fields and pasture.  We are currently taking orders and deposits on half and whole pigs that will be available in late May.

Organic Grass-Fed Beef

We are transitioning our herd of Hereford Beef animals to steers from our dairy cows.  Our beef does not contain any artificial growth hormones or antibiotics.  They are fed mostly grass, hay, and baleage with minimal grains. Currently, we are selling the last of our Hereford meat.

Organic Milk

In November of 2005, we welcomed an organic dairy herd to our farm.  Currently we are milking 45 cows at various stages of lactation.  Our herd is a combination of many different breeds of organic cows: Jerseys, Holsteins, Jersey/Holstein Crosses, Line Backs, and Dutch Belted Cows.  Our primary market for our milk is H.P. Hood who picks up our raw milk from the farm every other day.  They process and label the milk under the Stoneyfield Farms label.  We feel very grateful that Hood is willing to invest in Washington County to pick up milk from the few farms there are in this area.

Click here for a PDF version of the Bangor Daily News article about our dairy herd.

For those of you who drink skim or lowfat milk, we have developed some information on how to use our whole milk. We have also included information about how to make yogurt.
