The History of the WreathThe first Bell to settle on Tide Mill Farm came from faraway Scotland, a land where wreaths have been an important symbol in the Celtic tradition for many hundreds of years. The wreath represents the circle of life and the ever cycling seasons. In the colorless dark of long winters, the evergreen wreath was decorated with candles as a reminder that life continues under the earth and with the slow return of the light, so too will Spring bring forth a new season of green abundance. Today we may be less conscious of its early symbolism, but the bright, sweet-smelling evergreen wreath warms our hearts, and its gift, is a reminder and celebration. |
Tide Mill Farms, Then and Now
Today Tide Mill Farms is a multiple family nine generation farm. It is situated on 1600 acres of forests, fields, and shorefront, protected from development by a conservation easement. We are located in Washington County, on Maine’s easternmost bold, rocky coast. The traditional livelihoods of fishing, farming, and forestry are still the mainstay for many families in Downeast Maine, where people here live very close to the rhythms of the earth and its changing seasons.
Currently members of the seventh generation sustainably manage the woodlands, and diverse agricultural endeavors. The renovated century-old farmhouse is a vacation rental enjoyed by people who want to experience the beauty of coastal Maine on a historical working family farm. The members of the eighth generation produce organic foods: vegetables, fruit and berries, meat, eggs, and goat dairy. During November and December, the three generations work together to deliver fragrant balsam fir creations to homes from coast to coast. |
